The Mint Julep has been the traditional beverage of Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby for nearly a century. Each year, almost 120,000 Mint Juleps are served over the two-day period of Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby weekend at Churchill Downs Racetrack.
Join South Florida Les Dames d’Escoffier for fun evening with an overview of the historic Kentucky Derby sharing some personal stories of this beloved annual Southern ritual. Joined by LDEI President Judy Hollis Jones, who is not only a Kentuckian, she’s also President and CEO of Buzzard’s Roost Spirits, LLC., and an expert in everything bourbon! She’ll tell us all about mint juleps and their history of being part of the Kentucky Derby. Judy will take us through the intriguing process of creating THE perfect mint juleps for a crowd and will regale us with humorous and insider tales.
South Florida Dame hosts, Robyn Webb and Gina Natoli will present a lively slide show about Kentucky Derby history, fashion, and food. You’ll even receive the most beloved Derby recipes, the world-famous Kentucky Hot Brown, a “comfort” food sandwich, and the mint julep, so you can enjoy them as we watch the race together! Afterward the “Run for the Roses,” we’ll compare our bets while the winner of the Kentucky Derby Hat Contest is chosen!
Guests are invited to cheer on their favorites and watch the race on a giant projector screen. The race starts at 7PM but guests should arrive a bit early to secure their seats and cocktails. Guests are also invited to place their bets by ordering a Jefferson’s Small Batch Cocktail! Basically, if you purchase the cocktail you will receive a ticket with a horses name on it. Whoever receives the winning horses ticket at the end will receive an additional complimentary cocktail!
