The Museum of Graffiti is pleased to announce Ancient Futurism, a solo exhibition of new and recent works by James Monk aka RAS TERMS, a Miami-born spiritual street artist and graffiti pioneer. The exhibition opens on May 29, 2020 and will be on view through mid-August 2021.
A distinguishing quality of Ras Terms’ work is his embrace and expansion of his own form of art called “Ancient Futurism.” The artist will present a new body of work that delves further into Ancient Futurism, fusing the imagery and ideology of ancient traditions and cultures with a creative vision and exploration of the future. Ras Terms has studied and practiced many ancient traditions from Africa and South America including Rastafari, Yoruba, Alchemy, Kemetism, Santaria, Vodum and Hermetism. He has combined this deep base of esoteric knowledge with a reverence and personal connection to futurism, science fiction and new age philosophies. The result is an incredibly diverse and dynamic body of work that transcends time, culture, and the human condition.
Ras Terms has been dedicated to his craft since the mid-80s when he began painting murals in and around his hometown of Miami, Florida. Terms was one of the first street artists to paint the walls in the historic Wynwood Art District helping pave the way for the internationally-renowned Art Basel Festival. Since his early entry into Miami’s street scene, Ras Terms has become one of the most highly respected artists by his peers within the community. He has been a unifying voice bringing together artists to resolve differences and has served as a source of knowledge and wisdom within the local artist community. His presence as both student and teacher demonstrates a humble nature all while being a proponent of a wide range of styles learned in the streets and with the elders in his community. Ras Terms has traveled across the world painting, exhibiting at major institutions like the Oakland Museum of Contemporary Art and Smithsonian Institute, and earning his reputation as a master of letters and characters like his iconic “Street Angel” Character that was part of the Museum of Graffiti’s inaugural outdoor mural exhibition and can found on walls in countries around the world.
