The works in this presentation of the Naomi Wilzig African Art Collection range from objects used across the continent of Africa for fertility and divination practices. Artifacts highlighted within the exhibition illustrate the characteristics of fertility worship within the home and community and continue to play dynamic roles in the lives of many societies. All objects were collected for their display of genitalia and specific utilitarian functions of the objects regarding fertility practice by the cultures. Ranging in age from hundreds of years old to only several decades, they represent how various objects have functioned as powerful symbols, connecting spiritual values and social roles. This exhibition explores the significance, aesthetics and purpose of African material objects as well as their social contexts. Co-curated by David Tamargo.
