Marathon Super Boat Grand Prix visited the Middle Keys Friday through Sunday, July 3-5, when the powerful boats raced at high speeds parallel to the Marathon shoreline near the world-famous Seven Mile Bridge. Racing fans, Florida Keys visitors and residents enjoyed free admission to view the boats and meet drivers and crews at the Race Village dry pits at the Florida Keys Marathon Airport, mile marker (MM) 51 bay-side.
Wet pits were located at the eventÂ’s headquarters at the marina docks behind the Hyatt Place Faro Blanco Resort & Yacht Club. This location, including the on-site Lighthouse Grill restaurant, outdoor bar and pool, was open for food, beverages and race viewing during the event weekend.
Saturday, July 4th, families enjoyed a full day of activities during the annual Marathon Beach Party & Fireworks Show, featuring one of the Keys’ largest and longest fireworks displays on Sombrero Beach.
Race day on Sunday, July 5, teams raced in seven classes including Superboat, Superboat Unlimited, Superboat Extreme, Superboat Vee, Superboat Stock and Production 3 and 4 classes. The Gulf of Mexico race course runs parallel to the shoreline from Tranquility Bay Resort at MM 48.5 to the landmark Seven Mile Bridge, turning and finishing at Hyatt Place.
There was no charge for general race viewing at Marathon’s Sunset Park, MM 47, a prime spectator location at the base of the Seven Mile Bridge on the western side of Knight’s Key.
