Red Bull Candola Fort Lauderdale

Red Bull Candola Fort LauderdaleSaturday, April 14, 11am – Huizenga Plaza and Esplanade Park, Fort Lauderdale

Applicants have been selected to put their handiwork to the test in the return of the exhilarating rowing race down the New River, Red Bull Candola (can-doh-la), in Fort Lauderdale on April 14, 2012. Also known as the “Venice of America” for its scenic canals, sense of fun and the beautiful Intracoastal Waterway, the city will host the event that features home-grown ‘gondoliers’ racing and showcasing their creative, manmade, human-powered gondolas for the second year. The .33-mile race course runs between Huizenga Plaza and Esplanade Park in downtown Fort Lauderdale. Winners will receive a host of prizes, including awards shaped like oars, guided paddle board tours and more.
The teams participating in the 2012 Red Bull Candola are Adventures of Popeye: The Sailor Men!; Boats n Hoes; Double Secret Floatation; Funner Projects; Gnarnia; Got Wings?; Helmet Cam-Dola; Huck Finners; Pedro 2012; Shakers and Bakers; Super Mostaccio’s; Swamp Donkeys; Team Cojones; Team Dances with Moose; Team E.T.; Team Super Lucky Dragon USA; Tebow’s Ark; The 9 to 5er’s; The Archives; The Candola Military; The Hunt for RED BULL-TOBER; The Mile High Club; The Oatmeal Effect; The Sinking Sea-men; Titanic; Vikings!; and West Marine Waypoint.
Teams will not only compete on the river, but also on innovation and showmanship for the judge’s attention. Judges include notable names such as professional wakeboarder Steel Lafferty of Fort Lauderdale and Lexi Thompson, a native of Coral Springs and professional golfer who became the youngest winner of an LPGA tournament last year at age 16.
Before watching the teams row their creative crafts for the fastest time, guests will have the opportunity to meet participants, view their unique watercrafts and vote for their favorite to win the “People’s Choice Award” from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Huizenga Plaza. The race will begin at 11 a.m. with teams of three – two mates and a captain – after they perform 30-second skits to compete for the crowd and judges’ amoré for the title of the “Big Bambino.” Not one to disappoint, world-famous Red Bull Air Force member, Miles Daisher, will also make a guest appearance in true daredevil style. There will be mass amounts of Red Bull, food truck vendors, and limited Red Bull Candola merchandise. With large viewing screens at both parks, guests won’t miss a moment of the action.
