10th Annual "Heart & Star Award"Thursday, March 8, 6:30pm – Temple Beth Am, 5950 N Kendall Drive, Pinecrest

On Thursday, March 8, the Cancer Support Community Greater Miami, raised more than $205,000 at the 10th Anniversary Heart & Star Award Dinner.  More than 350 business and philanthropic leaders from the Greater Miami area came to Temple Beth Am in Pinecrest to honor Jennifer Stearns Buttrick, the Champion of the Human Spirit and SAP International, the Champion of the Community Spirit. According to the National Cancer Institute, an estimated 1.5 million men and women in the United States were diagnosed with cancer this year alone. The time that follows a diagnosis is often crowded with fear and great concern, both for patients and family and friends.  As a result, this charity’s mission is to empower participants and families to become informed advocates through support groups, learning opportunities and stress-reduction programs. The Cancer Support Community Greater Miami has helped more than 20,000 participants since opening their doors in April, 2002.  The mission of this non-profit organization is to provide psycho-social and educational support and services to cancer patients and their loved ones, completely free of charge. SAP International received the Champion of the Community Spirit Award in recognition of their commitment to the South Florida community as well as their efforts to unite others toward a greater good.  Lourdes Rosales, SAP Employee Communications Manager and Corporate Social Responsibility Latin America & Caribbean, accepted the award.
Emmy Award-winning news reporter and cancer survivor, Diana Gonzalez, NBC6 Health Reporter participated as Mistress of Ceremonies. Diana was the recipient of the Cancer Support Community Greater Miami’s Champion of the Community Spirit award in 2002 and is also a former host for fundraiser. She is also the sophisticated voice of our promotional video as Diana has donated her time and talents to our organization for close to a decade.
The 10th Anniversary Heart & Star Award Dinner also recognized Founder & President of the Cancer Support Community Greater Miami, Pamela Katz Zakheim with the inaugural Founder’s Award honoring excellence in volunteerism.  Zakheim is the driving force behind the CSCGM and started the affiliate in 2002.  Zakheim has volunteered as a valued staff person for the past 10 years and she and her husband, Dr. Richard Zakheim, CSCGM Founding Board Member have donated countless critical dollars to fund free cancer programs.
