Lecture: Sustainable Design Vs. Preservation

Lecture: Sustainable Design Vs. PreservationTuesday, May 8, 7-10pm – Art Deco Welcome Center, 1001 Ocean Drive, Miami Beach

Steve Mouzon, of the New Urban Guild, will give a lecture on the conflict between sustainable design, LEED certification and preservation. Today, historic buildings are threatened across the US by the desire for new LEED-certified buildings. But are new “gizmo green” buildings more sustainable than the historic buildings they replace? Not necessarily and often not by a wide margin. This presentation looks at issues every historic preservation organization should consider. Steve Mouzon is an architect, urbanist, author, blogger, and photographer from Miami. He founded the New Urban Guild, which helped foster the Katrina Cottages movement. The Guild hosts Project: SmartDwelling, which works to redefine the house to be much smaller and more sustainable. Steve founded and is a board member of the Guild Foundation; it hosts the Original Green initiative. Steve speaks regularly across the US and abroad on sustainability issues. He blogs on the Original Green Blog and Useful Stuff. He also posts to the Original Green Twitter stream. Steve will have his book The Original Green: Unlocking the Mystery of True Sustainability available for signing following his lecture.
