Sergio’s Cuban continues to break all the Cuban food rules by partnering with Beyond Meat® to create a unique plant-based burger inspired by the classic Cuban “frita” style burger loved in South Florida and beyond. Pronounced “free-ta”, La Flaca Plant-Based Frita launched at the grand opening of their Miami Lakes store. Sergio’s Cuban is proud to be South Florida’s first full-service restaurant to serve a plant-based frita made with a custom exclusive spice blend using Beyond Meat’s ground Beyond Beef®.
The #LaFlacaFrita burger is a take on Cuba’s original street food called the Frita. In the 1930s, these burgers were sold at propane-fueled carts that lined busy Havana sidewalks or parked in front of sporting events. The small burger patties, made with chorizo beef and spices and topped with onions, ketchup and potato strings, became a national favorite. By the 1960s, along with the many Cubans who fled the island’s revolution, the Frita found its way to Miami. Sergio’s has been serving these burgers since 1975 and has become an institution for Cuban food in Miami.
The Sergio’s brand introduced the La Flaca Menu (The Skinny Menu in Spanish) over five years ago as an alternative menu focused on healthy eating with lower-calories and nutrient-dense options including hearty salads, cauliflower rice, and lean proteins. Sergio’s Cuban has seen a growing trend in their consumers’ desire to eat less meat and connected with Beyond Meat® to develop their exclusive signature “frita” patty recipe at Sergio’s Cubans’ own USDA plant in Miami, Florida.
Sergio’s Cuban’s La Flaca Frita comes with two plant-based sliders just under 17 grams of plant-based protein wedged between two warm burger buns and served in the traditional Cuban style with onions, ketchup and crispy-fried to perfection potato strings. The Beyond Meat® based patty features no soy nor GMOs. Sergio’s Cuban is proud to boast their new take on this classic burger with less saturated fat for a cleaner Cuban diet.
The Miami Lakes store marks the chains’ fourth location after opening in North Miami, Brickell and West Kendall and joins the family of Sergio’s Restaurants existing seven full-service South Florida restaurant locations who has been serving the community since 1975. Fast forward to 2019 and Sergio’s Cuban, their latest fast-casual concept continues to pave the way for enjoying wholesome Cuban food with flavorful healthy options for omnivores and vegans alike. #laflacafrita | @sergioscuban
