Miami City Ballet will present Open Barre Dance Series, an up close and personal look at the Company and its dancers. On the program are George Balanchine’s Tarantella and Symphony in Three Movements and Christopher Wheeldon’s Liturgy. Tarantella is a non-traditional pas de deux, set to music by Louis Moreau Gottschalk, that demands great stamina and exceptional footwork, as it is performed at breakneck speed. Liturgy is a haunting pas de deux danced to music by contemporary composer Arvo Part. Symphony in Three Movements, a large ensemble work, choreographed to Stravinsky’s 1945 jazz-flavored score said to evoke his impressions of World War II.
MCB Founding Artistic Director Edward Villella, will offer a Ballet l0l on the piece, breaking down sections, narrating and explaining, and adding his own personal experiences with Balanchine having danced in the 1972 original production at New York City Ballet. Begin your experience at the open bar reception (sponsored by Bacardi USA) in MCB’s lobby a half hour before the performance. Performances are Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. (open bar at 6:30); and a Saturday matinee at 2:30 (open bar at 2).
