Opening Reception & Artist Talks at Locust Projects

Opening Reception & Artist Talks at Locust ProjectsSaturday, March 16, 6:30pm-10:00pm – Locust Projects, 3852 North Miami Avenue, Miami Design District

Now celebrating its 15th year of exhibiting experimental contemporary art, Locust Projects is pleased to present a site-specific installation by the New York-based collaborative duo Wade Kavanaugh & Stephen B. Nguyen. Known for undulating installations of twisted and gnarled paper that engulf spaces and surround the viewer, Kavanaugh and Nguyen will create an immersive three-dimensional drawing based on their impressions of the Everglades, where they were artists in residence in February with the AIRIE program. Their practice focuses on the collaborative process itself, resulting in abstractions of the entangled mangrove roots, waving sawgrass, and muscular storm clouds of the Everglades waterscape.
Locust Projects is pleased to present Limonene by New York-based artist Hannah Whitaker in the Project Room. The installation will consist of new site-specific photographs printed on vinyl and adhered directly to the gallery walls. Using litter scavenged from Miami streets, Whitaker composed impromptu assemblages, all photographed in one week-long trip in February of 2013. She then re-exposed the film using light leaks—where light makes direct contact with the film—and other experimental in-camera techniques. Whitaker, who frequently makes photographs using unpredictable methods and unwieldy materials, continues to embrace chance in Limonene. Unlike past bodies of work however, the new photographs revolve around the material specificity of one particular place—Miami.
