LEAP Presents the Compassion Project

LEAP presents the Compassion ProjectFriday, June 7, 7pm-10pm – Coral Gables Museum, 285 Aragon Avenue, Coral Gables

This photography project aims to upend the preconceptions our society has about incarcerated women. Who are they? How did they become incarcerated? Who and what have they left behind? What is possible for them now?

The systemic inequities and costs of mass incarceration have garnered increasing attention. To date, scant attention has been paid to the fastest growing segment of the prison population: women. The pathways to prison and the issues facing women are different than those facing men and the impact of incarceration is often very profound on the children they are forced to leave behind.

The project’s images will be printed in a large format. Each woman will write her story reflecting how she wants the world to see her. The narratives will accompany the images. The show, scheduled to debut at the Coral Gables Museum June 7, 2019, will also feature a downloadable app for listening to the women speak of their lives for a more intimate experience of the narratives. The app will also feature a curriculum guide and discussion points for a more in-depth study into women and incarceration. The project will be up for exhibit for a period of sixteen weeks and open to the community and student groups.
