In celebration of its 55th anniversary, the Archdiocese of Miami Archbishop Thomas G. Wenski along with gala chair, Mrs. Bunny Bastian, hosted the 2013 Archbishop’s Gala, serving as a reminder for the Catholic Church that the call to help the poor is not because they are Catholic, but because we are Catholic.
In the spirit of Pope Francis’ call to be “A Church for the Poor”, the proceeds from this very special event will benefit the social outreach efforts to the poor in South Florida. Francis made headlines last month when he said the Catholic Church had become obsessed by what he called “small-minded rules” about how to be faithful. The Pope said pastors should instead emphasize compassion over condemnation when discussing divisive social issues.
Over 1000 South Floridians enjoyed dinner and dancing and entertainment by the Gypsy Kings and Soul Survivor. The evening started with cocktail reception and silent auction, followed by program that included Pam Giganti from NBC 6 as master of ceremony, guest speaker, Griselda Ramos from Leadership Learning Center at St. John Bosco and special performance by the Lourdes’ Singers with “Angels Among Us”.
