Art Basel VIP Brunch at Fairchild

Brazilian Designer Hugo França Featured in Fairchild Garden’s 2013-2014 Art at Fairchild SeasonSunday, December 8, 9am-12pm – Fairchild Garden, 10901 Old Cutler Road, Coral Gables

Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is pleased to announce Hugo França as the next artist to be featured in the 2013-2014 season of Design at Fairchild, part of the annual Art at Fairchild exhibitions held in the Garden. Based in Brazil, França uses all natural materials to create functional and sustainable design pieces, often tables and seating. Each piece uses reclaimed wood from felled, burned or dead trees found in Brazil. By working them into functional designs, França gives new life to trees that are sometimes hundreds of years old. His works will be on exhibit at Fairchild from December 1, 2013 – May 31, 2014 and will be curated during Art Basel Miami Beach by Cristina Grajales of the Cristina Grajales Gallery in New York.

França lived with the indigenous people of a jungle in Bahia, a state in northeastern Brazil, where he learned unique woodworking techniques. Instead of masking it, he accentuates the natural quality of his materials. The pieces are organic and show a true appreciation and understanding of nature. Viewers can experience all the details of the wood used, from the texture to the color to the shape.

Given its harmony with the environment, França’s work will fit seamlessly into the natural landscape of Fairchild. Both the artist and the Garden are committed to fostering sustainability and promoting conservational awareness. França is represented by R 20th Century, a gallery in New York City dedicated to showcasing innovative designers and their creations.
