As the dancers gracefully moved across the stage, you had to acknowledge that you were watching one of the most spectacular performances of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Being mesmerized by one of the worldâ€™s most beloved dance companies is a cultural experience that everyone should see.
Alvin Ailey Dance Theater returned by popular demand to the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County from February 20-23, 2014. Aileyâ€™s Miami engagement was part of the Companyâ€™s 23-city North American Tour that marked the 25th season of its founder Alvin Aileyâ€™s passing. The show was led by Miami native Robert BattleÂ in his third season as Artistic Director.
Miami native Jamar Roberts and 30 other dancers performed a collection of electrifying past and new performances. Multi-award-winning British choreographer Wayne McGregorâ€™s Chroma, and dance storyteller Ronald K Brownâ€™s inspiring Four Corners was featured as premiers on the opening night Thursday, February 20, 2014 and Saturday evening. Also, at the Saturday family matinee, a special Ailey/Duke Ellington performance was productions of The River, Pas de Duke, and Night Creature. Three of the 14 ballets founder Alvin Ailey created during his career celebrates the famous Duke Ellington. Following the performance there was a free Q&A session with the some of the Ailey dancers. The dancers engaged the public with their heartfelt speeches and even took photos with some of the guest.
Alvin Aileyâ€™s rousing masterpiece Revelations had everyone clapping and swaying to the music. Revelation, an American classic, is acclaimed as a must-see and recognized by U.S. Senate resolution. It provided the inspiring finale at each of the five performances.
